At the core of the design is an irregularly shaped ceiling that extends outwards from the stairs, creating a sense of mystery and intrigue. This unique feature, coupled with a white stone countertop that stretches from the dining area to the horseshoe-shaped bar, allows the narrow space to develop axial spatial features both vertically and in depth.
The design employs a range of materials to set the overall tone of the space. Rough cement textures serve as the backdrop, smoked to evoke a sense of decadence. Retro-styled bricks, laid in a herringbone pattern, provide a deep and unobtrusive visual impression. The sophisticated use of titanium plating gradually ferments a romantic and lazy atmosphere within the space.
Lighting and furnishings also play a critical role in shaping the ambiance. Unique light fixtures create distinctive expressions on the wall, while light boxes reflect the simple and earthy texture of Lotos plaster. The green cloth furniture suffuses the space with faint hues, pervading the atmosphere with romance and decadence. The wine cabinet, crafted from raw wood interspersed with iron rods, features hidden lights that extend the front and rear levels of the racks.
The project, which started in May 2017 and concluded in August 2017 in Taiwan, posed several challenges. The most significant of these was balancing the diverse ideas of romance and decadence. It required careful distribution of building materials and arrangement of light and shadow to create an atmosphere that encourages relaxation and emotional release without being overly decadent. Another challenge was extending the visual and spatial sense within the narrow space.
The Romance and Decadence bistro stands as a testament to Kuan Yen Wu's innovative design approach. The space, despite its bustling city location, offers a peaceful escape. The design, with its unique ceiling, material choices, and lighting, creates an atmosphere that is both romantic and slightly decadent. This project earned Kuan Yen Wu a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, a testament to its remarkable design and innovation.
